Why the Mill

Why the Mill

Micro-Mark has been selling the MicroLux High Precision Heavy Duty Miniature Milling Machine, since the early 2000s and have sold thousands of these machines. Over the years the mill has evolved from being a gear driven mill with an MT3 spindle and 350 watt brushed motor to our current model item #84630. This milling machine now features a more reliable, easier to maintain belt drive system with an R8 spindle and 500-watt brushless DC. In addition to the high wattage motor the machine now has advanced variable speed motor controls with feedback circuitry that boosts the motor to deliver full torque even when operating at low speed. There are only a few similar machines on the market, but we would like to talk about why the Micro-Mark’s mill is your best choice.

Key Features of the Micro-Mark Mill

Better Motor - The Micro-Mark mill has a variable speed motor ranging from 100 to 2500 RPM. The motor is rated at 500 watts and comes with a brushless DC motor which means it is less likely to breakdown than a motor with brushes. Consequently, the machine is more powerful and will provide more torque even at lower speeds. Our current machine is more efficient, quieter, and more reliable.

True Inch Dials - Another unique feature of the Micro-Mark mill are our “True Inch” dials and 20 thread per inch feed screws. The X and Y directional handwheels of the worktable are equipped with zero resettable dials with 0.001” graduations providing 0.050” movement of the table per revolution. Most other mini milling machines available provide X-Y movements with 16 tpi feed screws and with 0.0625” calibrated dials making machining calculations for precise movement of the axises more difficult than working with the movement of our Microlux “True Inch” mill.

Easier and Less Expensive to Ship - Another benefit of the Micro-Mark mill is delivery. Other mills come as one unit and are contained in an extremely heavy crate. They are susceptible to damage in transit and are very heavy to handle and set up. These machines must be shipped as freight, often delivered by a truck equipped with a liftgate, and at a much higher shipping cost. The Micro-Mark mill is packaged in two heavy duty corrugated cartons that are easier to manage and deliverable by standard Fed Ex or UPS service. The two boxes ship as a matched set and contain a machine that has been factory assembled and tested then packaged for shipment. The boxes weigh 67 and 59 pounds. Having the mill disassembled into major components and packaged separately reduces the chances of damage and makes the delivery much easier to handle. Reassembling and setting up the milling machine takes about an hour and is easily completed by following the step-by-step instructions included.

Tilt Column – The Micro-Mark mill has a tiltable column that can be adjusted anywhere from a negative 45 degrees position to positive 45 degrees for making bevels, compound cuts, angled drilling, and various other milling operations.

Fast Easy Chuck/Collet Swaps – The Micro-Mark mill is shipped with a 1/32” to ½” capacity 3 jaw drill chuck, we also offer an optional ER25 collet set with an R8 shanked collet chuck (#84700) with 15 sizes of collets for milling operations. The R8 shank tooling make change-out form the drill chuck to the collet chuck quick and easy.

Many Accessories – There are many accessories and add-on’s available for the Microlux Milling machine, many of which are unique to Micro-Mark. Micro-Mark even offers the mill in a value package, item #89255 which includes a number of our most popular accessories. The accessory package is also sold separately under our Item #89255K.

Accessory Package

The accessory package includes a digital speed readout, a super duty power feed, the ER25 collet set with R8 shank, an 8-piece end mill set, and a quick-lock milling vise. This accessory package contains some of our most popular accessories, but Micro-Mark also offer over 34 additional accessories that for use with the Microlux R8 Mill.

Capacity – The Micro-Mark mill table size is 16 inches wide by 3 ¾ inches deep with 8 inches in X direction, 4 inches in Y direction, and 7 inches in Z direction or headstock travel. The Z directional movement is dual controllable with the use of the tripod handles for drilling operations and for quickly moving the head up/down the column, or with the use by a fine feed knob for precise movement during milling operations.

Milling Attachment for the MicroLux Lathe

Also, Micro-Mark offers a Grinder attachment to the lathe, Item #82883, which operates at 6000 RPM with a 1/3 horsepower motor. The grinder also mounts to the lathe in place of the compound rest and allows for grinding operations to be performed on turned pieces while still mounted in the machine.
