Description
Non-Specular Sea Blue is a flat, dark navy-blue tone developed to reduce sunlight reflection and improve aircraft concealment from above. It served as the dominant upper-surface color for U.S. Navy and Marine Corps aircraft during the height of World War II. This low-sheen finish was essential for blending into the open sea and sky, making it ideal for modelers replicating Pacific Theater air combat scenes.

Color Description
This flat version of Sea Blue corresponds closely to ANA 607 and FS 35042. It was designed to weather and fade with UV and salt exposure, softening into a more naturalistic blue-gray tone over time. Its matte appearance eliminated glare on the curved upper surfaces of aircraft wings and fuselages, providing tactical advantage during naval operations and enhancing realism in scaled-down reproductions.
This color was widely used on U.S. aircraft during WWII:
• Featured on aircraft such as the F6F Hellcat, F4U Corsair, SB2C Helldiver, and TBF Avenger
• Applied to wing tops, fuselage upper sections, and engine cowlings
• Integral part of the tri-color scheme in Pacific island and carrier-based operations
Modeling Uses
• Paint topside camouflage of naval aircraft operating in the Pacific Theater
• Combine with Intermediate Blue and Light Gray for historically accurate tri-color finishes
• Ideal for simulating faded and weathered topside panels with salt or oil wash techniques
• Use with Insignia White for contrast on national insignia and tail markings
