Micro-Mark acrylics spray smoothly through an airbrush right out of the bottle, but for fine detail, thin coats, or high-flow applications, thinning is essential. Use the 20ml Airbrush Thinner to customize the flow and performance of your airbrush-ready paints.

  • Designed specifically for thinning water-based acrylics for airbrushing
  • Enhances atomization for smoother, more even spray patterns
  • Maintains color vibrancy while improving flow and reducing tip dry
  • Slows drying slightly to reduce clogging and overspray
  • Made in the USA

Description

Micro-Mark Airbrush Thinner is formulated to work with our acrylic paint line and other water-based hobby paints. It ensures reliable spray performance, even through fine nozzles and at low PSI. This thinner improves atomization, reduces dry-tip buildup, and allows for smoother transitions, perfect for gradients, preshading, or modulation. Use it to adjust paint viscosity depending on the scale, surface, and detailing needs.

Micro-Mark Airbrush Thinner is included in these sets:
Item #29421 Essentials Acrylic Paint Set

Airbrush Railroad Acrylic Paint Set

Item #29270 Basic Airbrush Acrylic Paint Set

Modeling Use Cases

Miniatures: Spray fine skin tones, highlights, or shadow transitions
Armor & Vehicles: Use for preshading, panel fading, and modulation
Model Trains: Evenly coat structures, rolling stock, or weathering effects
Terrain & Dioramas: Thin paint for subtle earth tones, fog layers, or atmosphere
Sci-Fi/Fantasy: Apply glow effects, translucent filters, or battle damage

How to Use Micro-Mark Airbrush Thinner

  1. Prepare Your Paint
    • Pour paint into a separate mixing cup—never thin directly in the bottle.
    • Add thinner gradually: Start with a 3:1 paint-to-thinner ratio (or adjust as needed).
    • Mix thoroughly with a stir stick or pipette until smooth and lump-free.
  2. Test Spray First
    • Spray on a test surface to check consistency, spray pattern, and coverage.
    • Adjust PSI (typically 15–25) and thinner ratio to suit your nozzle and effect.
  3. Spray Your Model
    • Use sweeping motions and build up in thin layers.
    • The thinner helps eliminate spatter and clogs while improving fine control.
  4. Clean Your Airbrush
    • Rinse with water first, then flush with Airbrush Thinner or Micro-Mark Airbrush Cleaner.
    • Disassemble and clean nozzle if buildup is visible.

Tips for Best Results

• Don’t exceed 1:1 ratio unless aiming for very transparent effects.
• Use with a gravity-feed or dual-action airbrush for maximum control.
• Shake thinner well before use.
• Store thinned paint only short-term to avoid pigment separation.

Micro-Mark Airbrush Thinner is also available in a larger 8 oz size.

More Information:

This airbrush medium has been developed to adjust to the consistency of water-based airbrush acrylic paints and reduce airbrush clogging while preserving color & paint adhesion.

Add thinner to acrylic airbrush paint to your preferred consistency. The airbrush thinner works well with Micro-Mark’s Airbrush Paints if you want to thin. Micro-Mark’s Airbrush Thinner can also work with Micro-Mark’s Brush-On paints to thin to desired levels.

Micro-Mark’s Airbrush Thinner has also been tested with a variety of other brands of water-based acrylic paints and water-based acrylic airbrush paints with success.

Thinning water-based acrylic paints will create a different consistency, colors, and effects (well thinned acrylic paint may look like watercolor). Some may prefer to use acrylic paint without thinning, but thinner will make it flow better and will save paint. You don’t need a thinner for all acrylic paint.

We understand that users will have different desired levels of paint to thinner. With Micro-Mark’s Airbrush Thinner we like to start with 1/10 thinner/paint and then if needed continue thinning until desired consistency is obtained.

You can thin in the airbrush cup or outside the cup to better control the mixture. Micro-Mark’s Airbrush Thinner has a convenient cap that easily emits drops with control. The bottle has a liner that is sealing the spout to the bottle. Unscrew the cap and puncture the middle of the liner inside of the spout with a small hole by knife point. Replace the spout back on the bottle and dispense as needed.
