Silhouette Compatibility:

The Silhouette (all models) are PC and Mac compatible with the Silhouette Studio® software. The Silhouette Studio® software is compatible with the following PC Operating Systems:

Windows Vista (32 & 64-bit) - when running V3.7 or lower Windows 7 (32 & 64-bit) Windows 8 (32 & 64-bit) Windows 10 (32 & 64-bit)

Mac The Silhouette Studio® software is compatible with the following Mac Operating Systems:

OSX 10.7 or later Tablets (such as iPad® or Windows RT)

A mobile version for Silhouette Studio® software can be downloaded.Using External Files in Silhouette Studio: You can use your own images created in other programs with the Silhouette. The Silhouette Studio® software program is able to use external images that are in a basic raster image format (such as PNG, JPG, BMP, GIF, and TIF file types). These files can be opened through the File > Open option. Once in the software, the image then needs to be converted into a cut-table image that has lines present for the Silhouette to recognize as cut lines. A Trace feature is included in the software for this purpose.Alternately, if users wish to use Adobe Illustrator®, CorelDraw®, or other major vector imaging programs with the Silhouette Studio® program (to bring in file types that can be cut directly without tracing), they may consider upgrading to the Silhouette Studio® Designer Edition. This version provides the additional ability to import SVG files directly which you may have created in another vector imaging program (such as Adobe Illustrator® or CorelDraw®).

Or, if you do not wish to go through the Silhouette Studio® program, an alternate plug-in called Silhouette Connect™ allows users to send jobs directly from Adobe Illustrator® or CorelDraw® to the Silhouette.

The Trace feature may be found in the upper right-hand side of the screen in the silhouette studio. Instructions on how to use the trace feature are in the link above and the video tutorial below.

Review Update.

Update on my previous review. I've been able to import DXF files from 3rd Planit to Silhouette Studio Designer Edition. I tried using the technique suggested by the Micro-Mark comment but wasn't successful. I'm satisfied with my purchase and have used it to scratch build several structures, cutting both styrene and wood.

Cameo 4 - Still needs work

I bought this machine to cut styrene and wood for scratch building model railroad structures. The machine and software were relatively easy to set up and use. Unfortunately, it can only handle a thickness of .01 inches of styrene (haven't tried wood) with the autoblade. Tried the 3mm Kraft Blade for the Cameo 4 and it didn't work. The software will only recognize it for one material (not styrene - it's not even listed). I tried the workaround suggested by on line video, but it failed. I believe Silhouette has some work to do to get the Kraft Blade to work. In the mean time, I'm cutting up to 0.03 inch styrene (using maximum blade depth, maximum force and 10 passes) and finishing the cut with a hobby knife. The result is better than when I try to cut using a hobby knife, rulers and T-squares. I tried importing files from 3rd Planit via Corel Draw, but that didn't work. I found drawing the diagram in Silhouette Studio was fairly easy and I was satisfied with the result.
