Color Description
Insignia Yellow is a warm, saturated yellow that matches the FS 13538 specification used by the U.S. Army Air Forces and later the U.S. Air Force and Navy. It was commonly used for tail sections, nose art, propeller tips, and recognition stripes. The color was chosen for its exceptional visibility against sky and terrain backgrounds—especially important for identification and safety in formation flying and combat missions.
This color was widely used from the 1930s through the Cold War:
