Description
Intermediate Blue is a historically accurate mid-tone used extensively on U.S. Navy and Marine Corps aircraft from 1943 to 1945. As part of the tri-color camouflage scheme, this blue-gray shade served as the transitional tone between upper and lower surfaces. It was applied to fuselage sides and midsections to soften visual contrast and reduce detection from both above and below during combat missions over the Pacific.

Color Description
Intermediate Blue is a soft, desaturated blue with subtle gray undertones, typically matching FS 35164. It was designed to fade gradually with sun and salt exposure, making it perfect for weathered WWII aircraft modeling. This tone was applied over lower Light Gray undersides and beneath darker Sea Blue topside panels, forming a gradient-like pattern that adapted to Pacific Ocean and sky conditions.
This color was widely used on U.S. Navy and Marine aircraft in WWII:
• Prominent on F4U Corsairs, SBD Dauntlesses, F6F Hellcats, and TBF Avengers
• Used in mid-fuselage, wing root, and engine cowling areas in tri-color schemes
• Commonly seen on carrier-based and island-hopping aircraft from 1943 onward
Modeling Uses
• Paint midsections and sides of Pacific Theater aircraft in authentic tri-color camouflage
• Blend into Sea Blue and Light Gray for seamless historical gradients
• Ideal for sun-faded, salt-weathered effects on carrier-based aircraft
• Use alongside Insignia White for markings and panel contrast
