The U.S. M26 Pershing Medium Tank marked a major turning point in American armored warfare. Designed to rival Germany’s heavy armor, the Pershing made its combat debut in February 1945 during the final push into Germany. Equipped with a long-barreled 90mm gun, the Pershing engaged and defeated formidable Tiger I and Panzer IV tanks, giving U.S. forces the firepower and protection they needed on the battlefield. Though only 200 were deployed in WWII, the tank’s performance proved decisive.
The Pershing continued its legacy into the Korean War, where it faced the Soviet-built T-34/85 tanks fielded by North Korean and Chinese forces. Its superior mobility and firepower secured its place as a cornerstone of American armor development.
